History of the Budapest Centre
In 2006, a Steering Committee chaired by David Hamburg, President Emeritus of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Chairman of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Genocide Prevention, and Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, recommended the creation of an International Centre for the Prevention of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in Europe.
The Hungarian Government responded in a pro-active manner to this recommendation by preparing a Feasibility Study in 2008-2009. Based on the outcome of the study, the Central European University and the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church decided to establish the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities. It was registered in Budapest on 14 January 2011.
In the Deed of Foundation, the Founders proclaim their commitment to the protection of human rights and the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities in any area of the world.
The activities of the Foundation will contribute to a pro-active engagement in preventing genocide and mass atrocities and to the institutionalization of the prevention obligations reflected in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The important coursework of the Centre was first Accredited by EDU in 2014 (https://www.edu.int/budapest-centre-accreditation-partner-status)
