Budapest Centre attains EDU Accreditation and Partner Status

The Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities has attained Accreditation from the Intergovernmental Organization EDU and through a MOU has also become a Partner Organization.
This Accreditation has been granted in recognition of consistent and valuable work carried out by the Budapest Centre many years. The MOU celebrated between the 2 organizations sees the Budapest Centre become the primary advisory resource to H.E. Irving Le-Vance, the Secretary-General of the Intergovernmental Organization EDU, on matters pertaining to Genocide and Mass Atrocities.

Part of a policy adopted by EDU to highlight and recognize the work of institutions promoting peace, diplomacy or international relations, has seen EDU Accreditation attained by the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development at the University for Peace (Costa Rica), the Diplomatic Corps Institute (London, Berlin, New York), the Protocol International, (Belgium) and the International Peace and Development Training Centre (IPDTC), operated by the Peace Action, Training and Research Institute (PATRIR) of Romania.
In 2006, a Steering Committee chaired by David Hamburg, President Emeritus of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Chairman of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Genocide Prevention, and Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, recommended the creation of an International Centre for the Prevention of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in Europe. The Hungarian Government responded in a pro-active manner to this recommendation by preparing a Feasibility Study in 2008-2009.
Based on the outcome of the study, the Central European University and the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church decided to establish the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities. It was registered in Budapest on 14 January 2011.
In January 2012, the Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities launched a Task Force on the EU Prevention of Mass Atrocities to contribute to the EU’s continued efforts to translate its general commitment to the responsibility to protect into practice and make the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities a priority of EU foreign policy.
The Budapest Centre is the operational body of the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities.
It is a non-governmental international entity with unique technical and political expertise in the fields of conflict prevention, human rights, international and humanitarian law. Its staff is comprised of international experts, researchers, international lawyers, analysts, mediators and diplomats able to provide the Centre with the necessary knowledge and experience to reach its goals and objectives.
Prior to becoming Chair of the Budapest Centre, Dr. György Tatár was a career diplomat accumulating over 30 years in international diplomacy:

Remarks:
The Secretary-General of EDU (himself a former child refugee), believes a partnership with the Budapest Centre will be a positive and fruitful endeavor for both parties.
