EDU Accreditation awarded to Earth Charter Center at UPEACE (Costa Rica)
This intergovernmental organization is proud to announce the approval of EDU Accreditation for the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development situated at the UN mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) Campus in Costa Rica.

The Center is part of the strategic development of the Earth Charter Initiative, an organization inspired and developed in cooperation between former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations Maurice Strong and former Premier of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev.

Earlier this year, Secretary-General of EDU H.E. Irving Levance met H.E. Ruud Lubbers personally and decided to endorse the Earth Charter Initiative.

After further discussions between the Earth Charter Initiative and EDU, the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development situated at the University for Peace (UPEACE) Campus in Costa Rica, applied for, and was successfully granted Institutional Accreditation following a decision by the selected members of the EDU Assessment Committee.

The Earth Charter Center for ESD is coordinating the UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter, which was established in 2012.

The purpose is to help address the overall goal of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD), which is to integrate the values inherent in sustainable development into all aspects of learning to encourage changes in behavior that allow for a more sustainable and just society for all.

The specific area of knowledge creation and actions of this UNESCO Chair is the intersection between sustainability-related knowledge, education, and a strong ethical framework.
